In February this year, a 13-year-old girl in Italy was impregnated by her boyfriend and asked to abort the baby by the courts. The girl refused.
The sensational story bringing into global focus the question of teen pregnancy is now the basis of a ready-to-release film.
In Satish Kaushik's Tere Sang, the 17-year old hero (Ruslaan) gets his 15-year old girlfriend (Sheena) pregnant. The sensitive theme of the unusual love story is being kept under wraps for fear of unnecessary controversy.
Director Kaushik reluctantly reveals, “We've delved into teen pregnancy with Tere Sang. Today, pre-marital sex doesn't depend on the age of consent. We can't sweep promiscuity among teenagers under the carpet. It'll only aggravate the problem.”
Was it difficult shooting lovemaking scenes with actors so young? Kaushik says, “Fortunately, my lead actors aren't really teenagers. And really, today's kids don't need to grow up before learning about the birds and the bees.”
Adds the film's leading man Ruslaan, “I realise it's a very sensitive subject, but it's about time we faced up to the situation. I'm far older than the character I play, so I understand the situation maturely.
If my girlfriend got pregnant at 15, I'd definitely want her to abort the baby. But if she decided to keep the baby, I'd support her. I'm bracing myself to answer all the controversial questions when the film releases in September 2008.”
