Michael Joseph Jackson (August 29, 1958 – June 25, 2009), dubbed the "King of Pop", was an American recording artist and entertainer. His innovative contributions to music and dance, along with a highly publicized personal life, made him a central part of popular culture around the world for four decades.

One of eleven artists to have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice, his achievements included multiple Guinness World Records—including the "Most Successful Entertainer of All Time"—13 Grammy Awards, 13 number one singles, and the sale of over 750 million records. He was also a notable philanthropist, donating millions of dollars to the 39 charities he supported, and raising more through his own Heal the World Foundation.

The seventh child of the Jackson family, he made his performing debut in 1964 as a member of the group that became The Jackson 5, beginning a solo career in 1971. His 1982 album Thriller remains the best-selling album of all time, with four others—Off the Wall (1979), Bad (1987), Dangerous (1991), and HIStory (1995)—among the best selling. He popularized several physically complicated dance moves, such as the robot and the moonwalk, now iconic. He is widely credited with having transformed the music video from a promotional tool into an art form, with videos such as Thriller, "Beat It" and "Billie Jean" making him the first African American to amass a strong crossover following on MTV, and others, such as "Black or White" and "Scream", ensuring his popularity well into the 1990s.

Jackson's personal life generated significant controversy. His changing appearance was noticed from the early 1980s, his skin appearing paler and his facial features becoming almost androgynous. He was accused in 1993 of child sexual abuse, and though no charges were brought, his health suffered when he started using painkillers to cope with the stress. He married twice, first in 1994 and again in 1996, and brought up three children, one of them with a surrogate mother, actions that triggered more speculation about his life. In 2005, he was tried and acquitted of different child molestation allegations, which provoked a further decline in his health. Jackson died at the age of 50 on June 25, 2009, in Los Angeles, after suffering cardiac arrest. His memorial service was broadcast live around the world, and watched by up to one billion people.

The company is facing an estimated £300 million bill following Jackson's unexpected death on the eve of the tour, and the ticket offer is being seen by many fans as an attempt to claw back some of the cash.

Around £60 million worth of tickets were sold for the 50-date comeback tour at London's O2 Arena, with 750,000 people paying between £50 and £75 for a seat. Each fan received a sales voucher or receipt, and tickets were due to be sent out by post.

AEG hopes that hundreds of thousands of fans will take up the offer of a "commemorative" ticket, which was "inspired and designed by Michael Jackson" and is set to become a collector's items. Alternatively, full refunds will be given.

Randy Phillips, AEG's chief executive, said: "The world lost a kind soul who just happened to be the greatest entertainer the world has ever known. Since he loved his fans in life, it is incumbent upon us to treat them with the same reverence and respect after his death."

However, fans posting messages on internet forums expressed their outrage at the proposal.

"What a con! £75 for a worthless piece of paper! Sounds like the promoters are desperately trying to keep some of the money they've made," said one. Another wrote: "I had tickets to the opening night and I think it's awful that AEG are exploiting the fans by making them pay full concert price for the souvenir tickets. If they really wanted to treat us with 'reverence and respect' then they would offer the refund AND the tickets, and not make this blatant attempt to cover their financial losses."

Applications for a commemorative ticket must be made by August 14, although there is no closing date for full refunds. Anyone who bought a ticket through agents such as Ticketmaster, Viagogo, See, Ticketline or Seatwave will receive their money back, but many others who bought tickets on eBay will be left out of pocket.

Joe Cohen, chief executive of ticket exchange site Seatwave, said: "My guess it that between a quarter and a third of fans will take up the offer of a souvenir ticket. It's absolutely good business sense by AEG. For them, this is found money. It works for them but also for the people who are Michael Jackson fans, so it's kind of a win-win situation. I don't think you could say that AEG was exploiting the situation without the consent of their customers."

Within hours of the announcement, the yet-to-be-issued commemorative tickets were being offered on eBay, with one vendor explaining: "This ticket is not in hand yet, but is guaranteed. These were my original seats and I have the rights to the tickets as a collectors' item. Limited supply on these with huge demand."
